Primary Function:

The Minister of Music is responsible to the Pastor for assisting the church in planning, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive music ministry.

Job Classification:

The Minister of Music is a called ministerial staff position; therefore, the selection, election and termination of staff member is subject to the Powell Baptist Church’s By-Laws as stated in Section Three, Items 1A, B, and C as found on pages 11 and 12 of said document.  The Minister of Music is required to become a member of Powell Baptist Church.

Working Relationships:

The Minister of Music works with the Pastor and the Church Council in planning and scheduling the music program and ministries of the church.  The Minister of Music coordinates with the Audio-Visual Team, church’s Financial Secretary and accompanists in planning music and special effects for worship services. 

Responsibilities:

• Direct the planning, coordination, operation and evaluation of a comprehensive Music Ministry.
• Coordinate the Church Music Ministry with the calendar and emphases of the church.
• Work with and utilize the Music Support Committee as needed.
• Assist the pastor in planning worship services of the church and be responsible for the selection of music.
• Be aware of weddings and funerals to be held in the church.
• Be available to counsel, arrange and provide music for special projects, ministries and other church-related activities in cooperation with appropriate individuals or groups.
• Direct musical groups (Praise Band and Choir) and congregational singing.
• Plan and implement special music programs such as cantatas and fifth Sunday Night Sings.
• Work with the church nominating committee in securing leaders for the Music Ministry and assist in their training.
• Supervise the work of all music leaders in the Music Ministry.
• Encourage, coordinate the training and use of instrumentalists and vocalists in groups or as individuals.
• Teach basic music reading, skills and theory to musical groups.
• Communicate and coordinate with the Audio-Visual Team and be aware of current church music trends and technology.
• Supervise maintenance of and additions to the music library and equipment, including music materials, supplies, instruments and other music equipment for use in the church’s program.
• Prepare an annual budget to be recommended to the Stewardship Committee.
• Comply with all established church policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal and state laws.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements for Position:

• Minimum Education is high school diploma or GED
• Years of Experience as Music Minister is 1 to 5 years
• Ability to read music and to teach basic music theory/skills
• Ability to listen effectively and communicate clearly, orally and in written form
• Ability to speak effectively and confidently before groups
• Quality leadership and organizational skills
• Ability to perform basic computer skills and use computer software
• Commitment to biblical Christian principles and teachings both professionally and personally
• Sufficient good health to perform duties properly
• Must pass criminal, financial and sexual misconduct background checks
